We will never learn.

Today is remembrance day in Canada, a day to honor those living and no longer living who died fighting for our country. Good people who died too soon and those who's lives were forever changed.

I am not one of those people who watches all the documentaries on the wars and I don't go to the memorials, not because I don't care, it's because I find the waste of young lives overwhelming. It's enraging to me that some leaders somewhere, at all points in time, make imbecilic decisions and send ordinary people to their deaths. Ordinary people are my people and no matter what country, race or religion they come from, they don't want to have to leave their store, factory, farm or fishing boats to go off and end up in trenches being shot at.

Today is no different, I feel hopeless for the future of humanity, all our latest technology or advances is wholeheartedly embraced by those wishing to use it for war but rebuffed when it comes to using it to better society. Things like advances in medicine, sustainable living and education is viewed as some sort of witchcraft.

Today however is not a day for me to rant about the tragedy of war, today is a day to remember the ordinary people who made the greatest sacrifices so that I get to live in a country that is not under the rule of some paranoid dictator. I may not go to the memorials but I will not forget you either, thank you for your service.

Hello Steven
As you know I recently visited Hamilton where my husband's grandfather is buried in a soldier's grave. He fought for the Canadian black watch in ww1.
He was gassed, buried by a shell and developed "trench fever" after holding a trench on the Somme, waist high in water for 5 days.
We thought his sacrifice deserved recognition hence our visit.
I couldn't agree more regarding politicians and the dreadful waste of young lives.
Yes, today is a day for remembrance. In our own way and on our own terms.
I don't need the saccharine sweet fodder pushed down our throats. War was and is brutal. There are no winners.

We celebrate the "sacrifice" of soldiers so that we can send off more of our young, underprivileged kids to be slaughtered and to slaughter others. End of story.

We can have a conversation about whether it is worthwhile sending our underprivileged kids to slaughter others, but I have given up on the narrative of "Lest we forget". Past wars are horrors that maybe we should have avoided; future wars are completely justified and necessary. Meanwhile, we are beating the drums of war again right now.

Hello Christina, I meant to comment on your trip over earlier but things went haywire around that time for me regarding mom. I remember you saying people were helpful to you and I am glad of that. I think you were pleased with how things unfolded for your visit and I am also happy about that. I think it's wonderful that you put so much effort into paying respect to your husband's grandfather. You seem like a really kind person, if only I lived closer it would have been nice to meet you and your family.

Anne Marie, bone spurs, are they on top of his head because I think they are called horns in that case.

OL, I agree and I am sure everyone notices that the rich and our politicians try to steer their children out of harms way. It's ok for our children to die but not their spoiled spawn.

I recently met an army veteran who served in Afghanistan. He said he hated when people thanked him for his service because they were thanking him for killing other people. I'd never thought of it that way.

I think that's the wrong way to look at the word service, I have a lot of grateful feelings towards our people in the military but not because they killed someone. Too bad he feels that way.
