Liking Love Simon!

Yesterday I was only at work regarding some changes being made, so I had meetings and had to sign a bunch of legal papers blah blah blah and then was out early. I didn't want to go home, I wanted to do something enjoyable for a change so I decided it was my gay duty to go see Love Simon, a movie about a high school kid coming out.

I have read many negative reviews regarding this movie but for Pete's sake people, this is a movie about  a gay high school kid/coming out/love story and not The Gay Shape of Water! I liked it (lol)... so go suck a lemon! Yes, it is a cute movie, a feel good story like Disney goes gay or something along those lines. I think the intended audience is however the younger generations so people need to stop being so serious with the reviews. There is a lot of humour in the film so I don't think it's intended to be a major drama.

I found it reminded me of forgotten emotions from my past growing up gay. There were times I found myself blinking really hard to keep my eyes dry. I could certainly feel the moment when he is trying to tell his parents, the words "I'm gay" are pretty hard to get out at first, I thought the actor did a good job getting that emotional awkwardness across. I think there is a powerful message from the mother played by Jennifer Garner, it's when she tells her son that he deserves everything in life that other kids get to strive for. I think that message is going out to all the LGBTQ kids who don't have a parent to say that to them. I know I would have appreciated hearing a positive message like that when I was seventeen. I have a feeling we will see this movie playing on television from time to time in the future, which will also boost the self acceptance of LGBTQ kids. Despite all the warnings about being offensive, the only thing I could see offensive to straight viewers, was that the main character is gay.

The one scene I didn't really like was the ending with the ferris wheel, it was a bit too much and also earlier I lost a bit of sympathy for the main character when he was being so careless with his friends relationships. I felt a vibe like the teen movies of the eighties coming from the film, made me a little nostalgic for my high school days. There is a Hollywood happy ending that everyone keeps complaining about but seriously why not, why can't we have our happy ending. I wouldn't mind seeing this movie again in the future when it comes out on DVD.

I'd like to see this too. And I find Nick Robinson adorable.

I never understood dissecting movies apart. After all, their for escape entertainment...just watch and enjoy.

I agree, Maddie, it's only a movie.

I look forward to seeing Love Simon. What's wrong with feeling good? Especially these days when you wake up wondering in which direction our bigger and smarter missiles are pointed. Thanks to loudly DSL service we are still on Netflix disks, I indiscriminately click on all the LGBT themed films they recommend. Some are laughably bad or so bad they're good but most make me feel good.

Ferris wheel?! Way to give away the ending, guy.

I think a movie with a positive gay message is a great thing especially for young kids who are trying to figure out their sexuality.

Maddie, I had never heard of Nick Robinson before but you will find him even more adorable after seeing this. I can see rating movies but all movies are not made for the same audiences, yes just eat your popcorn and enjoy lol!

Mike, I agree with your agreement of Maddie, lol. Mike this is for the most part a feel good movie, yes something we need lately. I hope you enjoy it.

Mr Lurker, well seriously do you think I wasn't going to mention how the ferris wheel comes off it's axle and rolls over the religious nuts that are trying to perform restorative therapy on him! This is not a movie I would recommend for you, all the gay characters keep their clothes on and not once does a repair man come to the door for a drink of water.

RJ, yes exactly that is what I took away from this film. We need our happy ending, we deserve to have one too. Real life is bad enough without every gay movie saying how bad real life can be.

No repair man at the door? No pizza delivery boy? I'm staying home!

Mike, well actually there is a cute lawn care guy in shorts and actually there is a little blowing happening. However it is a leaf blower so not what you're hoping for, (gotcha).

I loved this film. I thought they did a great job. My only criticism is that the main character was so cute. Of course he was going to be accepted and fine with being gay. They need to make a movie with an uncool kid dealing with these issues. Of course that wouldn't be commercial, but would help me relate to it more.

TGA, I was thinking that as well when he was trying to find the other gay person by the Game of Thrones t-shirt. He made a face because the guys were not attractive like him, but what if it was one of them, their feelings are just as valid. That can be the next movie. I know it played to my high school fantasy of discovering that one of my attractive friends was gay as well, I don't think that happens to often in real life. The only friends that later came out as gay were all women!
