First Tomato Sandwiches, 2018.

I'm trying to get a post in before midnight, with 15 minutes left, here it goes. This evening I was able to make my first home grown tomato sandwich. Toasted or with fresh bread it's one of my favorite sandwiches. I add a little chopped green onion and for the first time a pinch of basil leaf, both also grown by me.

Nothing beats the taste of a home grown tomato, they just have so much more flavor and are juicy. I add a little bit of mayonnaise, some salt and pepper and it's ready to eat. The tomatoes are small this year, I have had to do a lot of watering and it's never as good as a nice long rain shower. The early girl plant lived up to its name with two tomatoes already. I am a little disappointed, my golden boy was mislabeled and it appears to be a roma tomato, I am not really a fan of those. The golden boy is a large yellow tomato, it has a very different taste and is low in acids. I will miss not having any this summer.

I, too, have had the experience of buying what I thought was X variety of tomato plant, and finding it was something else entirely. It's highly frustrating. Another reader in Philadelphia.

My Rare One and I are gearing up for our first toasted tomato sandwiches too. She's got a lovely beefsteak tomato reddening on the vine even as we speak.

Mmmmm. Tomato sandwiches. Yummy.we grow a variety called "Sun gold" an orange, cherry tomato. I'm not sure if you can get it in Canada but if you could, I highly recommend it.

I love tomatoes….also very good for the skin.

But truth be told, my favorite sandwich is cucumber sandwiches. Little bread square, a bit of mayo, lemon pepper seasoning, and a pinch of dill. I could gorge all day. And have.

Never cared for veggies in a sandwich, I'm old fashioned...just give me the meats.

I am mad-jealous! I so miss home grown tomatoes, which are the food of the gods - at least the demi-gods. I won't eat any other types of toms.

There is nothing like a home-grown tomato! Your post gave me the idea to walk up to the local farmer's market and buy some for myself!

I’ve been reading your blog for a few months now, and am very intrigued. And I love a tomato sandwich. Fresh is always best.

Anne Marie, I am surprised, I thought you guys would have a lot of tomatoes by now. I stopped growing cucumbers, for some reason I'm no longer a fan. I get one or two from a neighbor and that's it. Instead I grow honeydew and small watermelons, I enjoy them more.

Hello another reader in Philadelphia! Lol
I'm also afraid my ultra pink is something else as well, that will be frustrating. New owners took over the plant nursery, obviously they don't care as much as the past owners, they have lost a local customer.

Debra, beefsteak... mmmmmm they make great sandwiches! Good to put on hamburgers, pizzas etc.

Deedles O.O! You have offended the spirit of the tomato plants! Bad things will happen.... like your shower will just not feel right, sometimes too hot, sometimes too cold, your underwear will bunch up at the worst possible moment, no amount of booty jiggling or leg shaking will correct it! ;)

Christina, here they are called sweet gold and yes they are delicious!!! I didn't plant any this year but some came up on their own.

Sooo-this-is-me said...

Maddie, I have never had a cucumber sandwich, that sounds delicious. I am going to attempt making one.

Cali Boi, ranchers love you lol. I enjoy a good beef sandwich or chicken as well. Actually turkey and salmon as well but I only like fresh meat, I never eat processed meat.

Sooo-this-is-me said...

RJ, yes some people do say that about me... blushing, blushing... oh sorry, you meant the sandwich.

Sooo-this-is-me said...

Dr Spo, yes there is nothing like it. I have local vegetable farms near me as well so I can get some there when mine are coming slow.

Sooo-this-is-me said...

Michael, caution some farmers market vendors are just brokers, they buy produce from the same place your store buys them. You want a person who actually has a farm and grows them.

Sooo-this-is-me said...

Hello Scott! Yes fresh is always the best, the store can't compare in flavor. That goes for almost all vegetables I think.

Stim, honey, I wouldn't be able to tell the tomato plant curse from my every day life! I don't mind them in a salad, but never on bread even as a add on with meat! I take them off of hamburgers and sub sandwiches. They make the bread soggy. My b.l.t.s are just b.l.s.

My neighbors grow the male genitalia of the veggie world (tomatoes and zucchini) and they often gift them to me. I don't like either, but balder half loves zucchini so I say thank you and cook it.

Really, Stim? A curse for just saying ewwww? Those tomato plant spirits are such snowflakes!

Hopefully your plant will keep sprouting. I don’t have green fingers at all. I love tomatoes especially Isle of Wight heritage. Hmm, now you’ve made me hungry. I must make a sandwich...

I absolutely hate tomato sarnies
( we call them sarnies in Yorkshire)

They go soggy

Deedles, you are ok now, you broke the spell by saying you don't like zucchini, that works every time. I like most veggies... except cauliflower, that's because cauliflower is evil, ever notice it looks like the ghost of broccoli... eh.... eh?

Sooo-this-is-me said...

JP, then my work here is done. Oh and maybe let Guido slice the tomato, just saying. ;)

Sooo-this-is-me said...

John you are supposed to make it and eat it immediately, not let it sit. Anyway, everyone has different tastes.

Deedles said...

Stim, cauliflower is not evil. It's just misunderstood! Think of it as anemic broccoli, eh? Of course, I only like it raw with a veggie dip. Now zucchini, that's some evil shiz! I hate people who throw them into a salad where they try to pass for cucumbers! Yuck!

Just throwing a gardening question out there, does anyone know what has happened to watermelons with seeds? All I can find are seedless in the stores and they are too hard to figure out if they're ripe. Thumping doesn't do me a bit of good. All I had to do was look at the ones with seeds. The greener they were, the sweeter they were. It's hit or miss now and it is my favorite fruit.

Sooo-this-is-me said...

Deedles, it's what people demand these days, they don't want the seeds.
Cauliflower is not misunderstood, it's what happens to broccoli when it becomes a zombie! The only good about fried zucchini is the coating. Nice try, cooks are trying to make something gross taste good by frying it like chicken.

Deedles said...

Oh fine! Zombie broccoli! Now I know what's going to be chasing me in my dreams tonight! Giant cauliflowers pelting me with tomatoes! Thanks a lot, Stim!
Balder half likes the tubular squash steamed and buttered. GAG!

Sooo-this-is-me said...

Deedles, lol gag! Just call me Steve, Stim sounds like I'm on drugs or into some sort of sex fetish lol.
BTW zombie movies are the only horror films that give me nightmares, I used to love them in my late teens early twenties but I had to stop watching them because I would have nightmares all the time.

Deedles said...

Okay, Steve. I was just shortening your blog title with Stim. Steve is better, heh. One of my favo(u)rite names as a matter of fact. Hmm, I probably should've asked Anne Marie if she minded me calling her Carebear.

I don't do horror movies at all!

Sooo-this-is-me said...

Deedles, being named Steven is what turns little boy babies gay, I am working on the theory. I have noticed a large number of gay men named Steven, Michael and Dan are gay. Even though Hollywood jokes about the names Bruce or Denis, everyone I know by those names is straight, so yes... it's my parent's fault.... hahaha! I don't do horror films anymore either!

Deedles said...

Steven, you're gay? Gasp! I've seen Steel Magnolias, the name should have been a red flag!

Sooo-this-is-me said...

Deedles, that darn movie, it let the cat out of the bag! No actually I am not gay, I dated a guy for three years who was gay and you know how people are, they all assumed that because I was dating a gay guy that I was gay too! ;)

I LOVE YOU, STEVEN!!!
