In my hetero world.

I was thinking today about people claiming that we see gay people and gay society everywhere now. People on both sides of the issue say these things, supportive and non supportive. Really you see a gay society... because I don't! Everything regarding pride is always right down town, right in the center of the city.  This doesn't make it easy to get to if you have a car, the core of the city is not welcoming to drivers. However gay events concentrated down town certainly isn't gay people living a fabulously gay life all over the city.

Where is all this gay lifestyle happening. I pass hetero movie theaters, playing hetero love stories. I walk through malls filled with straight couples and straight families. They have straight book stores with stories about straight couples. The straight jewelry stores are trying to entice the straight couples in love to buy something. I buy my straight groceries from straight grocery stores. I go to straight work and work with straight people.

Where is this huge gay take over? I heard a woman complain on the radio, "first they took the beautiful word gay from us, then they took the rainbow, what more do they want"? Really... we took the rainbow? The rainbow?

There may be more story lines with gay characters in television and movies, there may also be more famous people being out in the open regarding their sexuality but as far as day to day living, I'm still reminded every few seconds that this is a heterosexual world.

Every now and then gay people should get together and do something... oh I know, let's have a parade... including all the different people in the LGBTQ community. Wouldn't that be something.

  1. If you were to pull up stakes and winter in Florida with the rest of the canadiansn you could join a bowling team, tennis team, beach volleyball team and basketball team. Not to mention softball team and rugby team. Gay events go one nightly to suit anyone tast and 'strange' is always excepted,

  2. Yes, you people took the rainbow. A guy wears a rainbow pin to celebrate God's covenant with Noah and everybody jumps to conclusions. Sheesh.

I agree with the woman on the radio. As you hinted, it is very difficult to consume modern media (movies, books, video games) without bumping into some token gay or trans character. The female protagonist in every hetero love story needs a sassy gay friend to keep things interesting. So if you are trying to stay on the straight and narrow you are mostly out of luck.

I thought the whole point of the city was that there is an excellent BRT system that gets you downtown quickly? All you need to do is park on the outskirts of town and ride in.

  4. One of the things xtianists and conservatives in general fear most is knowledge. When people learn that lgbtq people are just....people, their bigotry subsided or it’s hard to keep. And knowing gay people mak s it difficult to indoctrinate the young ones.
But the increase in visibility is still not enough. Niche movies and second fiddle roles are still a pittance. Progress has come slowly.
The whole straight pride fiasco is good. It makes them look as stupid as they are.
    Happy Pride!

  6. The gay take over is another urban myth. We are just becoming more visible.

  7. I think this quote sums it up "Gay Pride was not born of a need to celebrate being LGBTQ, but our right to exist without persecution. So instead of wondering why there isn’t a Straight Pride movement, be thankful you don’t need one."

  8. Darlin, for once in your life get out of that funk you're in and get out there. Do as Lurker said and get your ass downtown and enjoy your Pride weekends. There are all kinds of things going on. You just have to look for them. Use your computer to find out where the great gay stuff is happening and get your beautiful gay self with a few friends you know of out to it. It won't come knocking at your door, hon.

  9. Classis example of cognitive bias: we see what ascertains or convictions and we discard what does not.
