Today on the radio the host was talking about how so many of us are addicted to our phones. I have to admit that lately it's scary how I have become addicted. With me it's not so much my phone as it's the internet on my phone, I would be glued to a laptop if I had one with net access. They were asking if you ever look around to watch other people and how they are using, or not using their phones.
I find it creepy actually, I see people out for an evening meal, sitting in silence across from each other texting or scrolling on their phones. When I am waiting at a light and I look around, all the other drivers stopped in both directions are on their phones, even sometimes I have to honk because they don't notice the light changed green. The people walking with the light have their faces stuck to their screens. Nothing gets my hackles up faster than someone who keeps checking their phone when they are supposed to be speaking to me. I was at a fall fair and during a horse show I noticed half the people on the bleachers across from me were texting and scrolling. Everybody is on their phone, grocery shopping, in the checkout line, sitting next to me in the cafeteria, sitting next to me in the washroom, at the barber, on the bus, at the back of church, in line at the coffee shop. I have this vision in my head that somewhere, someone says, "oh would you be able to hold on for just one minute, I'm about to cum" or "I need to wipe myself"!
As for me, I think it gives me a false sense of connection, I feel like I'm with people when I am on line. I have become very addicted to my phone. When I am not on it for a while, I feel like I need a fix. I can't tell you how many times I've grabbed the phone to just check for texts or emails, promising to only be a few minutes, suddenly it's three hours later. I often fill the sink with water to do the dishes or put a load of laundry on, suddenly it's bedtime and I didn't do my housework. Sometimes in the evening, I tell myself to make sure no one is trying to reach me, just a quick glance and then I will make supper. The next thing I know it's nine at night so I don't eat anything because it's too late.
My bills for my data plan are so high at times that I would be too embarrassed to tell you. Many days I don't see much difference between me and some guy who spends time and money for that next drink. It takes away from some of my other hobbies, many nights I stayed up too late because of being on line, it has caused me to be late for work, it has kept me from visiting mom. It also really helps with my procrastination, I can waste time on line instead of doing the hard things in life. I better work on getting this under control. I realize that I am going to have to put this stupid thing down......... tomorrow....... maybe.
Guilty as charged, except that instead of continually refreshing for text messages I continually refresh your blog. But surely there is no harm in giving all our data to companies so they can learn our psychological weak spots?
ReplyDeleteThey said the same things about newspapers, radio, television. There's a classic b&w photo of executives riding the New York Central to jobs in the city. Every person had their head stuck in a newspaper!
ReplyDeleteBob and I are new to cell phones. I got mine in 2016 when my mother was in her decline -- my sisters insisted they needed to be in touch at all times. Bob got his in December. I'm happy to say I never took my cellphone to bed. They gave him someone's old fax number which would ring in middle of the night. I threatened divorce if he didn't leave the phone out of the bedroom.
I've blogged about this this. It's ridiculous. It's a peeve of mine. When your in others company, put down the phone. Even when I'm out at the bar or a club there's people, especially young ones....are on the phone!!!!!! Is the purpose not to get out and mingle?!?!?!? Because of this technology people now lack social skills. I went on a date once with a guy...constantly on the phone. He was so cute, but never returned any of his calls. Let him wonder why.
ReplyDeleteAND don't get me started on people talking on phones when being waited on by a waiter or sales professional!!!!!!!! I'll shovel it up there ass.
People are lacking general decorum, manners, and social skills. And it's sick.
Mr Lurker, large corporations are perfectly safe to give all our personal information to, what could possibly go wrong?
ReplyDeleteMike, yes people loved their newspapers but they didn't go around walking into poles or driving the wagon while reading them, lol. The companies are saying that they designed them to be addictive but really it's up to me to do something about it. They say to replace one addiction with a better one.
Maddie, I'm with you, I would walk away from someone who was always on the phone. I heard of a story where a man kept checking his phone on a first date with a woman. She went to the washroom and this gave him the break he wanted to play on his phone. After a few minutes he suddenly gets a text from the woman saying she was in a cab half way home and to enjoy his evening out with his cell. Lol
I switch my phone off when I’m with others. I leave it at home often by accident and when I get back the world hadn’t ended in disaster. I try not to browse but here I am - ok - I’m switching off.

JP, reading this blog doesn't count as being stuck on your phone. I find when I check my phone, there is nothing going on; however if I happen to not check it some evening, people start calling my landline, "I've been trying to get you"!
ReplyDeleteI too am a bit addicted to my phone, but luckily I can force myself to put it down. It isn't the same as maple syrup...I can't get enough of that stuff...and I am all out.

ReplyDeletebrwhahahahahahahahahahahaaha!!!!!!! Why didn't I think of that!!!!! That's great.
I'm guilty too. Last night at dinner, four of us sat at a table having a conversation while checking things on our phones. In business it's called multitasking. In social situations it's seems rude but I do it.
ReplyDeleteMichael, I have waffles but ran out of syrup also, it's getting so expensive to buy now. They call it liquid gold here sometimes.
ReplyDeleteMaddie, lol I can totally see you doing that to someone that ticked you off!
RJ, I guess it depends on the friendship, seems to be the norm for some people now, I personally would feel insulted if people started checking their phones. With the kids today however, I see them at our age sitting down to dinner and texting to each other rather than speaking to each other. Lol.
People shouldn't be too hard on themselves as cellphones are designed to push the brain buttons in the same way drugs do. Consider this, the customers of phones are called users not customers.
ReplyDeleteWe are all just coming to gripes with this.
Dr Spo, yes and even the cell phone companies are now saying to be cautious because they designed them to be addictive. Sorry I have to check this text!
